Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Develop a more flexible relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings while taking steps towards what matters to you.
Understanding ACT
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, combines mindfulness, acceptance and practical action. It focuses on psychological flexibility: noticing what is happening in the present and choosing actions guided by your values, even when uncomfortable thoughts or feelings are present.
What sessions may involve
Depending on your needs, ACT may include:
- Noticing thoughts without automatically treating them as facts or instructions.
- Building awareness of emotions and physical sensations.
- Exploring the values that give your life direction.
- Recognising when efforts to avoid discomfort are restricting meaningful activities.
- Taking small, realistic steps towards personally important goals.
Acceptance and meaningful change
Acceptance in ACT means making room for internal experiences. It does not mean approving of harmful situations or giving up on change. The focus is on developing more choice in how you respond and how you move towards the life you want to build.
Appointments
Psychology appointments are available via telehealth across Australia, or in person in Brisbane. Contact the team to discuss your needs and whether this approach and appointment format are suitable for you.
